"What's Your One Thing", Going Green. A Homestead Guidebook, DIY Recipe Collection, Part 1 by Ginger Hill at Salisbury Garden Gift Shop. First, "What's Your One Thing", I heard on Simon, a local radio station. Awareness to Us ALL, what you do matters. Inspired me to look again, and re-visit green product recipes. And on a pesonal note, making a self made book for my girls, now adults with thier own households. With experience in making homemade products, and little cookbooks for the church and my girls, and now with more focus on homesteading, and sustainability, doing it, and the rising cost of everything...well, Here we are.
KEEP CALM & GO GREEN, Back to the Basics. First we need supplies. A list of 12 items that will be used to make our own household products.
And there will be a few other little things, as we get into personal care products. I'm going to say it, "every homestead should have herbs", Ginger Hill.
Herbs to cook with, food is medicine, herbs for home remedies, herbs are one of the best plans for bees and pollinators, and just like you can't make herbal medicine without herbs, you can't make plant based cleaning or personal care products wihou herbs or at least some essentials, which we know are dervived from the herb...so YEAH, HERBS and sustainability, homesteading, and growing your own just goes hand in hand.
Here's a list of the most used here on our homestead. AND some of our top best sellers here, both fresh and dry herbs available.
A note on REDUCE- REUSE- RECYCLE, we need vessels, or containers of all sorts, really. I placed jars on our list. Yes, jars, lots of jars, all sizes, these will used for mixing, storing, and using our homemade products. BUT, NOT JUST JARS, but squeeze bottles, like ketchup or saving your shampoo or shower gel squeeze container to re-fill with your product when it's empty. Which brings up a point, THE SWITCH. I'm not going through the house and throwing everything away to switch to green. I'm gradually transitioning...what works for me, my household items, as things empty out, saving the container if I can and replacing it with my own. So that brings you to making your own decisions of products, every household is individually different, and there are MANY MANY MANY aspects of Going Green.
Just remember to wash.
Cleaning, Deodorizing, and/or Disinfectant products DO NOT NEED harsh, toxic chemicals. In this DIY Homestead Recipe Collection, a guidebook to make your own natural solutions or your household with simple ingredients you should have on hand. I hope to help myself and YOU to Help the enviroment and save money.
Here are a few products I will be including in this collection.
Before I get to sharing recipes, THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!
The first 2 recipes I will be sharing is Laundry and Dish detergent.
As I mentioned previous, each individual household is different.
Laundry Detergent recipe is NOT FOR He washing machines.
All the information I gathered on homemade laundry detergent and washing solutions concludes ONLY He detergent can be used in He machines, and homemade detergent will ruin the sensors. So If you use a He washing machine, this recipe is not for you.
Dish Washing Liquid we have the same kinda thing.
This recipe is for Hand Washing dish liquid. So if you use a dish washer , this recipe cannot be used in the machine.
With that being put out there, I don't want you to be discouraged, only 2 products of the MANY I will be sharing in the Homestead Collection.
The old fashion method of washing clothes in pure soap is still one of the most reliable ways of doing laundry, and still is the least in cost. Even if you have a
He washing machine this is one for the book, if you ever need to wash something by hand this gets the job done.
In part 2 , I will go over this laundry detergent recipe with tips, and instructions and with Dish Liquid method using pure soap. Here's a couple of photos.
Until then, Stay Calm & Go Green. , Ginger Hill
