Edible flowers are available at SalisburyGarden gifts in Salisbury, NC. First starting with our Fresh orgaincally grown Chives. Fresh chive blooms, and Sage blooms both edible herbal flowers, we started marketing in 2021, available online in our Etsy Shop and Website. Fresh chives were featured in a local bar & grill in Salisbury. But I'm not here to relish on the past few years evolving more into fresh ingredient available.

I'm here introducing another edible flower speciality, Dianthus. Beautiful Red Dianthus or Carnations, we have been growing for a few yers, using in our homemade teas and smudges. And NOW fresh red Dianthus flowers for a special fresh ingredient. I'm excited with plans of expanding this little plant , adding more to the front of the garden. Lovely, little short masses of bright red blooms to welcome us.

So let's get started. All About Dianthus Flowers.
YES Dianthus flower and/or petals are all edible. The leaves, and stem can cause mild gastrointestinal distress if eaten. And for those with sensitive skin, the leaves may cause a mild dermatitis reaction if touched, don't be alarmed, THIS, is VERY COMMON, with most herbal plants and flowers. Wear gloves if your sensitive and concerned.
Dianthus also called Carnations, and Pinks have flowers that are all edible and not poisonus. Often crystallized with sugar to decorate cakes, and have a spice clove like flavor. The leaves and stems should not be consumed.
Most Dianthus including Carnations, Pinks, Sweet William have a
pleasant floral spicy flavor that clove or nutmeg like taste.

Flowers can be candied, or pickled.
Medicinal Properties for Dianthus
In history, Dianthus have been used for medicinal properties, some species including carnations are a great source of essential oils. These oils can be used to help treat symptoms stress and depression through fragrance, or aromatherapy. Dianthus has historically been used for tonics to treat fevers, help with stomach cramps, and reduce chest congestion.
Traditional Flowers Used in Tea
Dianthus Flowers can be used for herbal tea and tea blends. Tradtional flowers used in tea include red tropical hibiscus, roses, Dianthus, and mint. The most fragrant roses and Dianthus will have the most floral flavor as well. Makes sense , right. Dianthus giving that floral spice of taste like clove or nutmeg.
Use alone or with other fresh herbs to make Dianthus Flower Tea.
Pick Fresh Petals or Herbs
Rinse petals and herbs in cold water.
Add 1 cup o boiling water over 1 Tablespoon of fresh petals or herb blend.
Steep 3 to 5 minutes.
